New life for old furniture

When I got together with my husband nine years ago, I also became privy to all of his little eccentricities. For instance his obsessive hunt for the perfect black fleece. And his addiction to magazines… he rarely comes home without at least one tucked into his bag. The evidence is found in stacks around our home. Nearly every issue of Dwell magazine and Elle Decoration (UK edition) going back to October 1995 are among the more impressive piles we have. One daunting stack has thoughtfully been dubbed my “read pile” by my husband – he’s read them all, but it takes me considerably longer. That’s not to say that he hasn’t made me a convert though. I admit that I even get the slightest tingle of anticipation to see what he’s going to bring home next.

A few weeks ago he brought home a new favorite, BBC Homes & Antiques magazine. Sounds stodgy, but is surprisingly fresh and original. In it’s pages I discovered the work of Zoe Murphy, a young British designer who’s brought together two of my favorite things: reclaimed mid-century modern furniture and original silkscreen patterns.

Zoe Murphy has a passion for re-using and breathing new life into items that others might see as junk. She picks up her pieces at auction, on ebay, at charity shops and antiques stores and dresses them up with bright illustrations inspired by her seaside hometown of Margate. Her furniture can already be found for sale in London on Liberty’s amazing fourth floor. For someone so new on the scene, that’s pretty darn impressive.

  1. I love this! I’d trade out my dining table for one of hers in a heartbeat! Such a great find!
